Long Awaited: Balenciaga

Balenciaga is probably the most anticipated show of any season. Designer Nicolas Ghesquiere did not disappoint. While it may seem a rambunctious mess at first (as high fashion can) the deeper reality cements Ghesquiere’s position at the top and separates him from free-floating conceptualists. There was Prep (equestrian blazers and jodhpur pants.) Punk (combat heels and shredded dresses.) Futuristic (bright plastic shoes that looked more like ‘transformers’.) And French bohemian (fringed scarves piled high around models’ necks.) Balenciaga’s fall collection fused a bevy of disparate influences into one cohesive story. That is both the goal, and often the failure, of so many collections. Here there was only success to be found.
